    Friend Picker Gadget

I wanted to share something I threw together today after reading about the OSML release. I had previously accomplished this using a complicated combination of the old PHP SDK and jQuery. This is a friend picker gadget that uses a text input field and when you begin typing, shows a list of suggestion matches and you can choose a person from your friends list. This is the similar functionality provided in the FBML for facebook. This still requires jQuery and the jQuery autocomplete plugin and this is not a working example as I have the files stored on a private server, so you have to download the appropriate items and host them somewhere. (unless MySpace wants to implement this!) Also, let me know if you found any errors as I couldn't test this using the OSML gadget editor on MySpace. (down at the current moment) You can download the XML file here: http://droidle.org/friendpicker.xml (right-click, save as...)

    Re: Friend Picker Gadget

Actually, it might be an appropriate time to ask why the App Gadget XML Editor isn't working. I want to make this a demo app so everyone can see a working example. It was working fine before and I had it implemented before, but now it gives me an error every time I try to save the source. If I link directly to the working example I have, I get "Unknown error with gadget" if I copy and paste the example into the editor, then I get "Error processing result occurred". Like I said, this worked perfectly fine yesterday and as I was working on it in the editor, at some point the entire field went blank (I lost all the code and had to re-write, thanks) and after getting my code back in there, I have had this issue since. Is it possibly because I am linking to external libraries? Please let me know what you can. Also, I forgot to mention that this works perfectly in the Sandbox Editor, but I can't link it to the file the traditional way. For some reason it doesn't recognize the new tags. Thanks.

Thanks! There is currently an issue with this editor and we're working on it. The link has currently been disabled.

    thanks,

    Joel

Thanks, Joel! I really appreciate it. Any idea when this would be working again? Also, do you see the merit in this gadget? I have yet to receive any feedback on this.

The link works now. Just remember it is a beta app, so keep that in mind.

    thanks,

    Re: Friend Picker Gadget

I have it actually accepting my OSML code now and saving it, but it throws a 404 error when I try to render the canvas. In addition, it doesn't accept the URL for the gadget's XML file. I know I shouldn't be whining so much about a beta tool you guys have but I just wanna make sure you guys get this up and running correctly, as I'm pretty excited about this new advancement for MS apps.

    Re: Friend Picker Gadget

Just an update, as of today, the standard method of uploading an XML file from a URL is still not recognzing the os namespace. This may be normal behavior if this is simply part of OS 0.8 and does not support OSML. That's fine with me. The main issue is that in the beta App Gadget XML editor, it now accepts the code when entered directly, but still throws a 404 error when testing the canvas. In addition, the URL entry field will give an error "Unknown error with gadget" and will also give a 404 error when testing the canvas. This has only been obnoxious because I really would like to get this demo app posted since I know I have a working implementation. Also note that the code I've implemented works perfectly fine on the OpenSocial 0.9 Sandbox Editor, but I don't believe I can post the application using that method. Thanks, Drew

     Drew,

We are working to resolve this issue, and hopefully a solution will be implemented shortly.

    thanks,

    Joel
