I have been reading some older posts on errors when using makeRequest on any port other than 80.  I was curious if that limitation has been lifted.

Also I was curious how folks are implementing the server side of this -- is there an easy way to hook it all up using commercial hosts (I'm using Joyent on a dedicated server)?  Or should I just roll my own?

That limtation is not lifted at this time.  It's possible in the future, but this decision has not been made yet.
