Word carousel - requires users to install ‘Microsoft Silverlight’.

    1.  Word Carousel
    2.  http://www.myspace.com/419513934
    3.  Copy and paste why your app was denied in the first place.
    ------------------------
    a. Downloads.
The Canvas surface requires users to install 'Microsoft Silverlight'. Applications cannot require or contain any downloads or installations.
    b. Contains search.
    Applications cannot contain web searches.
    -----------------------
    4.

      Regarding 3a...........
The application does use Silverlight - Microsoft's browser plugin. It actually must be downloaded and installed. Adobe Flash player is also browser plugin, which actually must be downloaded and installed too. Flash based applications are acceptable, but Silverlight ones are not. Where is the principal difference between Flash and Silverlight? The current popularity/ repute?  Does it mean Silverlight applications can not be accepted at all?
        Regarding 3b.........
The same "web search" is included in other two applications made by me ttp://www.myspace.com/329877309 and http://www.myspace.com/350341330. The both applications are accepted by you without any questions from the first attempt.
The "web search" - actually dictionary lookup (the game "plays" with words) -  in the new application is equal to the old (already accepted) ones. Does it mean the accepting rules at that point were changed since the first two applications were accepted.

    Sincerely,
    Serge

Unfortunately, we cannot allow apps to contain web searches. It looks like your previous apps were approved a while ago, before this rule was added to the guidelines. Unfortunately, you're going to have to remove the searches from those apps as well, or they will be suspended. Please have them removed by the end of this week (i.e. Oct 17th).

Also, as a rule, applications cannot contain any form of download or installation, other than Macromedia Flash, so unfortunately all Silverlight apps are ruled out.

I understand that this is inconvenient, and I'm sorry, but as the platform is evolving, our rules and guidelines must evolve as well.

    Thank you for the explanations.
The "web searches" from the both previous applications have been removed as you required.

I have a feeling this is because Microsoft is "in bed" with Facebook.  But that's just speculation.  There's no other reason that Flash should be allowed and Silverlight shouldn't.  It's a favorites game with RIA platforms.

No, our policy has nothing to do with Facebook Smile

The rule to not allow any type of downloads was made at the very start of the platform, across all apps. Flash was then allowed, because most users already have it installed anyway.

However, we do take into consideration feedback from developers and users, and update our policies from time to time. There may be changes to this one sometime soon, but until then, I'm afraid the rules still hold.

That's somewhat ironic because of what you are trying to protect against.  Adobe still hasn't fixed all of the problems with Flash and 64-bit OS.  If I try to use Internet Explorer on my 64-Bit Vista at home...everything works fine until I visit MySpace....the flash plugin loads and crashes the browser.

Hopefully Silverlight will continue to gain market saturation as it's actually a great tool for developers.  Hopefully the people at MySpace will see that too and amend their polocies.  For Flash the only option you have is Actionscript and fumbling your way around the Flash application.  Silverlight apps can even be built in Notepad (not for the faint of heart).  But the tools do a good job of separating logic from presentation and the apps can be built using Javascript, VB.NET, or C#, making it a very versatile tool.

Allowing both technologies would definitely encourage more developers to write diverse and interesting applications for MySpace.  I'm waiting patiently (or impatiently?) for Silverlight to be accepted so I can start diving into developing for MySpace.

And my apologies for taking the Facebook shot.  :)  It's just a bit frustrating when I'm exciting by a technology that I'm not yet able to use.

We're a family of geeks here, so we understand how frustrating it can be when you can't get your hands on the technology you want Smile

Unfortunately, Silverlight is not available yet, but as stated before, we are looking into it!

Any word on Silverlight yet? It would open up so many more options for app developers...

I am also hoping to find Silverlight supported in the near future.  After signing up for an MDP account, it was somewhat of a let-down to find out that only Flash is supported.  Personally, I think Silverlight shows immense promise and doesn't require the relatively large monetary investment to get started that Flash requires.
