&lt;p&gt;I agree it's important to maintain both url-based and email-based OpenIDs. I think building that flexibility into the model will be extremely ciritical to it's success. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I know a number of folks (including myself) who from a privacy perspective don't necessarily like having to give or use my email address for every website I log into. I can definitely see the other side of the argument too though. Everyone has an email already, so why not use it?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I say let's bet on both horses and we'll have a better chance of success. Giving users that option will also help OpenID get a quicker, wider adoption by more users web-wide. The bottom line is that if we make it easy, and accessible for everyone we can guarantee our own success.&lt;/p&gt;
