For those of you wo attended the MySpace Developer Platform launch event in London, we wanted to let you know about an upcoming OpenSocial hackathon event also in London.

This Sunday, the 6th of April, come jump into some code and learn how to get OpenSocail apps up and running on MySpace and other containers. Engineers from MySpace and Google will be on hand to help walk through code examples, and help you build your applications. This is a great opportunity to get started building OpenSocial applications.

BT has graciously volunteered to host this event at BT Centre, 81 Newgate Street. London EC1A 7AJ, just across from St. Paul's tube station, and we hope to see you there

The event will start at 11am and go as long as people can still type. The event is totally free and of course, and of course there will also be sufficient quantities of beer and pizza.

Schedule

Each day will be run to this skeleton schedule:

9AM - 12PM Welcome, Tutorials and Code Walk-Throughs led by MySpace Developers

12PM - 1PM Lunch

1PM - 7:30PM Development & Breakout Sessions

7:30PM - 9PM Show-n-Tell, Beer and Pizza, & Prizes

Tutorials

The day will kick off with a morning of tutorial and workshop sessions led by the senior architects of the MySpace Developer Platform. They will walk you step-by-step through the process of creating a MySpace App. You will follow them from creating the initial account on the site to cutting the code with the API hooks and finally to uploading your app to MySpace!

devJamin'

After a break for lunch we'll open the space up for app hacking. Feel free to kick off a new app at the event or bring your existing project along to continue developing. Code on your own or collaborate with others - it's up to you. MySpace developers will be on hand to answer all your questions.

Breakout sessions

During the afternoon we'll also run ad-hoc breakout sessions led by MySpace developers on any of the aspects of the platform you have questions about.

Show-n-tell

At the end of the event we'll offer everyone the opportunity to take part in the show-n-tell session. Over a cold beer and a slice of pizza, of course! Those who have something to show will be able to demo their app at the end of the event. Or alternatively you can complete your app at home, and come back to one of the regular follow-up 'show-n-tell evening sessions' that we'll be holding soon after.

There may even be a prize or two for the most promising app(s) built during the event!

Hack-a-Thon!

Today is Saturday, January 12th, and we are holding the first MySpace internal hackathon. Tech folks from all over MySpace in LA and in Seattle (connected by teleconference) are playing around with our new dev site and getting their first look at what we've been working on for so long.

This Wednesday, a bunch of us are heading up to San Francisco (our main office is in Beverly Hills, with two satellite offices in San Francisco and Seattle) for an Open Social meeting. There are fairly regular Open Social meetings, but this one is special to us, as we’ll be presenting our platform for the first time. Nothing's actually going to launch Wednesday, but I believe this is going to be the first time one of our developers will get up and explain what we mean when we say "API".

Of course, we obviously wouldn’t be doing this if we weren’t fairly close to releasing the dev site to the world – and we are. This site is truly going to be a place for developers (and other interested folks), and the place to go for all MySpace (and MySpace Open Social) documentation. It’ll also be where developers can go to start playing with our API’s, to create an Application Profile, and to participate in our developer community.

Random aside – Seattle is currently playing Green Bay right now, and the guys up in Seattle aren’t paying attention. They’ve stated that the hackathon is much more important to them. Meanwhile, everyone down here is well aware of the scores. But, as they point out, “geeks like sports too!” Don’t they ever…

The environment here is fun, there’s nothing like sitting at one hackathon and ending up deciding that it's going so well, we need to schedule more.

Now, enough blabbing from me - I have an app to write!
