Guidelines, Editor's Picks and more

Heya all,

First off, I want to say a huge thank you to all of the developers who updated their applications to be compliant with the new guidelines. These guidelines are in effect from here on out, and should we find applications not that are not complying, we will suspend.

Next, a number of you have asked about how you can become a featured application in our gallery. It's easy! Simply send your application name, link, and description to us at developerrelations (at) myspace.com. Our content folks pick out the best of the bunch, and run those as Editor's Pick's in the gallery. So if you've got a great app, send it in.

And last but not least, you all may have noticed that we switched the default view in our gallery to "recently popular." This sort gives all apps a shot to appear in there. The first page of the gallery is no longer restricted to only the apps with the most installs, or those that have been up the longest.

Questions, comments, whatever, let me know what you're thinking here or in the forums, we all appreciate the feedback!

- Stephanie

I think that the 'recently popular' sort order is an excellent way to order the applications, but the problem I see is that with this (default) sort, not all applications in a category are shown. If you look at the video category, for example, only 58 applications are shown. If you switch to the alphabetical sort, all 375 applications in this category show. Because this is the default sort, if your application stops being popular, it drops out of the application gallery's default view and makes it that much more difficult to get found by new users.

All of the popular/most type sorts are limited to 1,000 applications, whereas alphabetical will always show all apps we have on the site.

I think a lot of people have thought we've been stuck at 1k apps for a while (and we never were) because of this, but it is unfortunately a technical limitation at this time.

Thank you for the response. Do you plan on eventually showing all applications in this default sort? Not showing them really does hinder application adoption.

For the time being, would you consider adding a very visible message to the bottom of the last page (when on the default, recently popular sort) that says something along the lines of "To see the other N applications in this category, please click here"? Although, it's still not the same as showing all of the applications in the default sort, I think it could help.

Thank you again for your time on this issue.
