A message from Tom

Hello Everyone,

One of the things I've always loved about my job is interacting with users on a daily basis. Not only do I enjoy it personally, but it's been a key factor in our success. I can't think of another company where the customers have such a direct feedback loop to a senior executive. If I make a mistake, I hear about it. It takes all of about 10 minutes from the launch of a feature for me to know whether we did it right or whether we failed miserably. Almost everything we've created with MySpace came from users telling me what they wanted.

The MySpace Developer Platform has been something of an anomaly in that regard. Users were scared of it before it even arrived. Before the platform launched, users told me they didn't want to get spammed, and that they chose MySpace over other sites because they weren't getting poked, and nobody was throwing sheep at them. Every social network--from Bebo & Orkut, to Friendster & Facebook has "apps" now. Most of the feedback I received was that users were sick of it. As one forthright user put it: "apps suck!"

What these users' anxieties and concerns did not take into account is that MySpace has always been a platform. MySpace has always had "apps." From MySpace's inception, we've benefited from the creativity and resourcefulness of both our users and third-party companies. It's MySpace users creativity that led to profile customization and created the entire ecosystem now known as MySpace "layouts." It's YouTube that gave users the kind of video player they wanted on MySpace. It's Photobucket, Slide and RockYou that gave MySpace users the kind of tools they needed to share their photos. There were widgets similar to Honesty Box and Graffiti on MySpace before many other social networks even got started, but with a key difference: those widgets did not have the unchecked messaging capability that has made other platforms so painful.

It was by viewing the terrain from this broad perspective that we decided to move forward, for the first time, with something our users were not expressly asking for. We believed that customized profiles, widgets and applications provided real value to users. In the past, we'd just gotten out of the way and let it happen. With the plan for the MySpace Developer Platform, we set out to provide the tools that would ease this kind of development and facilitate better, more useful features for MySpace users. But we also knew we had to take a measured, cautious approach to app communication, or the platform wouldn't work.

Because MySpace was so open from the beginning, security and spam had always been a concern for us. We tried to allow users to do anything they wanted, while stopping them from getting "p0wned". We were forced to block companies and code at different times, and no one understood our reasons. We were not public about our "rules" and our actions, because we focused on the users, not the developers. That was clearly a mistake.

With the launch of MDP, we've tried to change that. We've been very public about what we are doing, when we are doing it and why. I've said very little about the platform until now, because, I simply don't like to do press, interviews, or write about our plans in this way. There are many people at the company far better at communicating with our partners than I am. But I thought speaking now was important because this blog post is meant to represent the voice of the users to the development community. What users want is something I've lived with daily for 5 years now, and I am best qualified to make these statements.

Balancing the needs of a community is never an easy job. There are many constituents, all with their own needs and desires. The needs of the few cannot outweigh the needs of the many. (I always wanted to quote Star Trek philosophy!)

With these concerns in mind, we launched MDP with deliberate restrictions around app communications. Most notably, apps were limited to sending one message at a time, and we gave users the ability to block messages from apps they didn't like. This approach worked -- users have not rejected the MDP or Apps overall. In fact, most of the fears around the notion of "apps" have disappeared into the ether. Apps like Picnik, Flixster, Shelfari and many others have added real value to MySpace without causing any user concerns at all. Still, we realized that some good, popular apps were causing alarm among the userbase, because of the way they incentivized user behavior. Left unchecked, these apps could create a negative experience for everyone, making it a chore to check your inbox each morning.

To prevent that from happening, as of today, we're instituting new rules for how apps can communicate with users on MySpace. You can read about these rules here and in the Application Guidelines, The main thrust of these changes is to limit app communications that are based on incentivizing or tricking users. To be clear, the purpose of these changes is to emphasize to developers that their focus should be on creating great apps that users will want to tell each other about. The best viral software is software you can't live without. Unfortunately, for some developers, the focus has been on how to come up with the best methods of viral distribution.

The outcome of these rule changes mean that some very popular apps--those which are games designed to give users points for spreading the game around, may cease to exist as before on MySpace. That said, I think its important to suggest what we were hoping for with the creation of this platform.

When we conceived of the MySpace Developer Platform we thought of the "apps" that were already so important to MySpace users--the YouTube's and Slide's of the world. We hoped developers would create software that had real utility and improved upon the MySpace community. We hoped they'd make features that we'd never have time to build ourselves. Or features that improved upon our own. We also realized that because users were only able to control their profiles, there had very little third-party development around other parts of MySpace. (Very little, but there had been some.) This is why we opened up app access to the user home page. We hoped developers would recognize the opportunity of creating value for the user on the users very own start page. Apps don't have to be about profile "bling" -- users could login to MySpace and enjoy homepage access to all sorts of useful features. Imagine reading email, looking at news, or using a web-based IM from MySpace start page, and you start to get the picture. The platform provides that flexibility, but so far I haven't seen an app that really takes advantage of it. Here's to hoping someone will!

Thanks for your time and your work!

Great move - I always believed the best apps spread by word of mouth alone (and I already blocked comments & messages from all apps - can't seem to block those bulletins though!)

This gives an incentive to everyone to create the best they can!

I am glad to see this change, but I'm confused about the quid-pro-quo on MDP.

App developers may make applications, but growth is only possible through:

a) advertising

b) comments, bulletins, and other post-to

c) profile/home navigateTo

d) word of mouth

Additionally, the apps have to be free and can't navigate away.  Can Myspace provide an example of how such a system encourages market forces / monetization?  It just doesn't seem sustainable...

In a survey of apps, I've noticed that the apps w/ substantial install base can attribute their growth to:

a) excessive use of postTo

b) paying to be a "featured" app

c) profile bling

Your suggestions (email, news, im) do not grow well because apps (and app developers) are naturally biased to be either:

a) Spammy

b) Big advertisers

c) Profile bling

For this reason, there is no real incentive to make a "useful" app as much as there is to make a "viral" app given the rules of viral engagement on Myspace.  An ideal system would be one where quality, grass roots apps can grow without advertisement and in the face of spammy apps.

There are many highly valuable apps out there that are not growing because they followed the rules.  As such, could Myspace please open up the ACC specification to community review and get feedback before it is released?

How about getting rid of "Featured Apps" so small guys can compete on the quality of their application rather than the size of their wallets?

how about a "recently installed" section on the apps page, similar to what youtube does with videos currently being viewed? or top installs today? these would seem to allow for viral openings.

Thank you so much for doing something about this. I was worried that there would be application spam just like there was on Facebook when I heard about the new platform and it really was getting out of control with people posting 3-4 of the same bulletins or comments in a row asking people to install a certain app. It was really getting on my nerves and I had to block messages from applications in my settings.

Tom, this blog explains alot. I've been rejected by the MDP once already and I'd very much like to be accepted so I can work on some applications. I've sent in another application but i'm afraid once again I'll be denied.

I agree, but my question is, did Tom really write this?

First a bit of propaganda, a dash of appraisal, and then some stern scolding. So beautifully crafted.

Could be 100% by him, just a thought.

Ok...fine, Tom. But why do you continue to hide behind the curtain? Why are you not willing to deal with the real issues with Myspace, or the people who have those issues?  The only thing that makes Myspace worthwhile is that it's free. There is no customer service, or customer support.  Facebook is free also, but at least they respond to customer issues. On your "profile" you say you're here to help. Yet you don't accept messages, and only seem to accept comments from those who are willing to kiss your ass. Great help there! You are an ass, Tom, and anyone who doesn't realize it is an even bigger ass!!! Prove me wrong, I dare you!!!

As much as we appreciate someone like Tom and his crew ,making a safe place for us to inform ,play and socialize, we still have to realize that many "bad things" are apt to creep in as well. We see Tom and crew forever getting bashed for difficulties with programs ,apps, etc. and not enough credit for trying to control the hackers that sneak in to a very open website. Sometimes the atmosphere in myspace can take a very scary and annoying and at times explosive nature, due to OTHER causes, apps and just plain MEAN intrusive people. But, these are not of Toms doings, and I just would like to state right now ,and here, that we ,Buffys family, would like to show appreciation to Tom and his Crew for having given us MYSPACE to get messages of importance out, meet people, and enjoy some stressfree com time :) As for the hackers and app competitors , if its not good for MYSPACE, we will let Tom know ,and he will get rid of you. For those making legit and fun and important apps, please continue with less fear of getting slammed ,just make sure your apps are less able to get hacked into spreading virus' ,which is what we are really afraid of. To all, have  a blessed day, Buffy n mommies xoxo

Tom, give us a choice!!  If we want to use You Tube, Blingee, Slide, etc....it should be our choice what we want on our profiles.  Every ap I've used seems to cause major problems with my profile, etc.   Since I've started using them, my popup blocker stopped working.  It may be just a coincidence but nothing went wrong before the aps.  If I wanted aps, I'd go to Facebook, but all they really do is clutter the hell out of my profile.  Obnoxious aps like this Own Your Friends thing...it was fun at first, but THEN, I ended up being owned by someone I did not know, and this became scary: this opened the door for pedophiles and perverts to start stalking kids unaware!  I ended up being owned by someone I did not like, and had blocked and deleted.  Tom, there was a good reason why I blocked that person, but yet, there I was, on her page, using the Pet ap to spread nasty stuff about me, and there wasn't a thing I could do about it...DESPITE the fact that I had blocked applications.  I blocked that PET game, and people still have figured out a way to sneak them into comments so that my profile will accept them.  I'm sick of it too.  While we have legitimate charity apps and widgets going, if you read the fine print on your own terms of service...many of these aps actually violate your own terms of service.  Sorry Tom, you win some, you lose some.  I think some of the aps, like Own Your Friends, could be better managed if a person was given a choice, such as, "John Doe has bought you as a pet: Do you accept or Deny?"  But then we get right back to the spammy problem.  I don't know...Just a thought.  B

Thanks Tom. We need more of this from you sometimes. One problem other than mass stupidity that I see running rampant on the bulletin board about the apps and imaginary hackers and viruses, is that you can't block the apps by visiting the "add app" page. Not knowing how to totally block the games freaks people out, as does being a pawn in the games whether you want to be in them or not. The Own Your Friends game is a particular thorn in the sides of people I associate with. It is a general feeling that the only people who should be bought and sold, are people who chose to add the game and play it. I for one find being owned by someone who thinks it's a trip to own Miss Masterpiece irritating. I even tried the game, but it's another full time job. You can't remove yourself from these games. You can block messages and comments from them, but you are a game piece by force. This is what we don't like about the apps in my circle. Thanks again.

Amen!!!  Thank you Miss Masterpiece for this comment.  I could not agree more.  There are people on my top friends, who are in a BUSINESS, and their profiles are set up so that they can associate with the people who can become their potential clients.  They have producers, writers, directors, and other people who are well known in the entertainment industry looking at their pages.  It looks tacky, and very unprofessional to visit their pages and see fifty comments in a row, with someone who wants them as their pet.  I blocked this application from this page, but still, someone owns it as a pet.  I had no choice in the matter.  And many of them feel that if they are going to be hired or purchased, then why not hire or purchase their services for real, rather than this highly stalkerish game.   Like the lady above, I too think it should be a better option for folks to be owned only if they are willing participants.  I have no clue who the hell owns my page.  lol.   So Tom, please, get rid of the aps.  Give people a choice to go outside of My Space to get the widgets instead.  (Flixster for example, has its own site.  Rock You has its own....see where I am going?)  Those of us who are trying to keep our profiles polished and professional looking are merely being aggravated to death.  Our bulletins are being buried underneath mounds of pyramid style application invitations, and the last thing any of us needs are additional things to go technically wrong with the site.  It was fine the way it was before the aps in my opinion.  I know you meant well, and meant for these to "Keep up with the Joneses" and do what the others were doing, but  my argument is that if all the sites were the same, then they would not be unique for what they are.  I have a personal Facebook account and never use it.   If you want to add a feature kind of like one another site has, then my suggestion would be that you install a box on the profile edits where people can store and  change their layout style sheets more easily.  Just choose one, and click a button, voila...new layout in seconds.   I think this would be better, since My Space is all about personal exhibition and showing off the things that make the users unique.  OK, getting off my famous soap box now.  B

i've been using myspace for about 18 months, i found it excellent, no problems, until last week. i found trying to communicate with myspace support a living nightmare. i recieved a note that someone had said my block button was disabled, which it was not, never has been and i have no desire to do that. i dont think i give anyone reason to block me but if they want go ahead.

my custom contact table did not have the word block written on it but everyone should know from their basic profile where this feature is. loads of tables dont have it, and loads the writing is slightly of, common sense tells you its there. the complaint was obviously malicious.

myspace support where no help at all, did not answer questions and sent dead links. it then appeared they were accessing my profile and deleting the code to make a point. and no i haven't been hacked, i'm pretty aware of the net pitfalls.

i do have a problem with this, unless someone is doing something highly illegal, or harrassing people the staff here should not be anywhere near personal accounts. i've read the tos, and i see the rights myspace have given themselves and i find it a bit morally questionable. where else can an organization permit themselves to access personal info, do what they want with anything you upload, do what they want to you generally and never be held accountable. this is a joke. i realize myspace is in its infancy but unless it wants to stay there it has to address some issues.

check the blog if you're bored and doubt this, it's pretty lengthy on this subject though.

i think myspace staff and support should have a public profile with photos and enough info to make people aware they are real. maybe then, when they think they can be held accountable they'll put a bit more thought into what they do and say. it has to happen, it would create a more stable enviroment for users. as it is, the current system is potentially open to a lot of abuse. if you did have stalker tendencies, this would be an ideal place to get a job, millions of peoples personal stuff to access, do want you want, and never have to explain, ideal.

by the way my account is now set to private but blog can still accessed via url.

I am just searching for answers and not sure where to look....I have fun wit the PET Apps, but I keep getting these bullitins....................

"Here is what the "Bought you as a pet" application program actually is...people are still not listening!!!

The name of the culprit is the Virtumonde trojan and the ctfmon virus which both begin as browser helper objects which install themselves without user consent into the windows registry..

This takes place even when the latest antivirus programs are in place and active, along with anti-spy programs. They are completely ineffective in blocking it..

Its ability to disguise itself as an essential windows component is the secret to its success. This virus will replicate itself in the windows registry, the start up, .dll lists, temp folder, even the uninstall folders and rename itself as a copy of legitimate files to blend in and become undetectable..

It's a virus in its truest form, "A program which replicates itself for basic self preservation" Once in your system, it will begin to rename itself as a shared file for programs you most often use..

For example, once I detected this virus and began trying to destroy it, I worked and worked for several days without success after which the virus began to rename itself as files which are actually part of my antivirus program!!!! This makes isolation extremely difficult!!!

The damage it does once in your system is it will quietly run in your background and connect to malicious websites and open a port for the DL of other harmful programs, keyloggers, malware, worms, viruses, IP hijackers, you name it!!! You eventually lose all control over even the simplest program functions due to the amount of harmful traffic being installed..

Even if your anti virus detects it, and you follow strict removal rules, it always has a way of returning..

1- disconnect from internet completely..

2- re run virus scan and fixes..

3- delete all usage tracks, temp files, cookies, history, empty recycle bin..

4- restart and have antivirus scan and fix before the windows log in at the boot sector..

5- quarantine a copy of the files for instant recognition and block by anti virus..

ALL THESE METHODS ARE TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE!!!!!!!

As soon as you reconnect to the internet, the virus will reassemble itself and become active again..

It can even attach itself to Jpeg/Jpg files disquised as part of the file only adding a few kbs to the overall pic. It can be anywhere in your system..

-Tom-"

...........................

I have not found any blogs or warnings from Tom telling us this so is it true or is it just a rumor started by those who hate the apps. If any one can tell me anything about this please send me a message or something.

Thank You

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I found you because I am in desperate need of help. I can't get in contact with u on myspace no matter how hard I try. When can i write u on myspace? If this was a little thing, then I wouldn't be going through all this trouble.

I had this sort of trouble before but I didnt complain or do anything...im a patient girl...and i assumed that it would stop. but apparently NOT!!!!!!!!!

Please help me, tom!! Do you think u can?

I change my password everyday, but some hacker (who doesnt reveal his name or IP address) deletes hundreds of the comments on my page!!!

Right now, he deleted 50 comments on my page all together!!!!! Other people's comments!!!! I even added a code to HIDE my comments but he somehow manages to delete them from my site!

Moreover, he keeps deleting my friends!!!!!! You guys aren't bothering me, right? Of course not, so please help me because I am a loyal MySpace member!

PLEASEEEEEEE HELP ME! WHAT CAN I DO, TOM!? That hacker thinks he's some genius who can't be caught. Can you help me so this hacker gets caught??? I contact Myspace a lot but they dont reply!!!!!

This is SOOO frustrating!!!!!! I don't know why I have to deserve this sort of stress from the hacker! I think he's one of my friends....But even if I delete all of my friends, will he STILL be able to delete the comments from my site?????

I really wish you would read this and respond...Even the Myspace team members arent of any help...so I searched for you through this blog!

I'm Misaki from Santa Monica. I live in Santa Monica like u but I never got to see u anywhere.... :(

I will be waiting for your response greatly.

Thank you so much, Tom!!!!!!!

Help!  I can't reply to messages being sent to me on my myspace.  When I hit  'send' a message comes up saying that I have to provide a "correct user name"?  What's up with that?  Has someone cracked my account and is harrassing me? Or have I accidentally reconfigured something? I'm a bit of a technophob.  All help is welcome and simplistic answers are begged for!

Thanks,shannon
